"This
book ROCKS... It's unexpectedly entertaining and
enlightening (pun intended)... There are no fads
here, kind of like having a groovy guy in your
living room who is incredibly knowledgeable about
how your body works and what it needs, and understanding
about resistance to change, but who will also
inspire you to start thinking about what you're
putting in your body, and to get off your ass…
I loved it!!!" |

Isn’t
eating a lot of fruit just like eating a lot
of sugar? |

Well,
yes and no.
Let’s
start with the “no.” In some
sense fruit sugar (fructose) is better
for you than table sugar (sucrose), because
fruit sugar is broken down in your body
at a much slower rate than table sugar.
This means that sugar from fruit causes
less of a spike in your blood insulin
than table sugar does, which is favorable
for your body fat levels as discussed
in the “White Devil, White Devil”
chapter of Your Fat. If you’re going
to eat a lot of sugar, whole fruit is
probably the best place to get it from.
Now
at the same time, yes, you’re right.
Even though fruit sugar is a little better
for you than table sugar, and even though
you get loads of vitamins and phytonutrients
when you eat fruit, in the end you still
also get a lot of sugar. This is a lot
of energy that your body will store as
fat if it isn’t used through mental
or physical activity.
In
the end though, most people don’t
have to worry about eating too much fruit.
Most of us don’t get nearly enough
fruits and vegetables in our diets to
really make this a concern. If you are
working behind a desk with a 4-smoothie-a-day
habit, maybe you’ll want to think
about cutting back a bit. Otherwise, eat
the fruit. Your body will thank you.
